Suggestions

posted by Jonathan at 9:57 PM

Its really amusing to me, almost everyone I tell about my trip has some piece of advice, small or large, something that they would do, were they in my shoes. Mostly people say stuff like get AAA, or don't go alone, find yourself a girlfriend first, then head out on the road with her. I love all this advice, it is really charming to hear the wishes of others come out in a vicarious way.

Some of my favorites so far:
  • skip the US and go right to Europe; there's nothing better than immersing in a culture where you don't necessarily know the language. Then you really need to rely on yourself.
  • buy a nice telescope, and go out to the desert and use it away from the population and light pollution.
  • when in Florida, make a side trip to the Bahamas.
  • one person suggested to me that for a vacation fee, I could go and do volunteer type work in certain countries, and really live like the natives for a week or two and help the local environment
  • buy an audio book of On The Road by Jack Kerouac

I love all these suggestions, and I don't want to stop hearing them, and I'd love to do them all, but I probably won't. I'm going to just go it on my own and see where the road takes me. Then today, the song Peace of Mind by Boston came over the radio, and I knew that was the perfect song with which to start off the official Soundtrack to my trip. The lyrics are too perfect. Plus it's a completely cheeseball 70's rock anthem. I'll update with more Soundtrack songs in the future.

Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying

Future's coming much too slow

And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on stayin'

Can't decide on which way to go

Yeah, yeah, yeah

I understand about indecision

But I don't care if I get behind People livin' in competition

All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder

Hope it doesn't take too long

Can'tcha you see there'll come a day when it won't matter

Come a day when you'll be gone

I understand about indecision

But I don't care if I get behind

People livin' in competition

All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...

Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin'

Doesn't mean too much to me

Lot's of people out to make-believe they're livin'

Can't decide who they should be.

I understand about indecision

But I don't care if I get behind

People livin' in competition

All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead. Look ahead.
